Tony Alva Soul Sailor

2014-09-26 CNBGarfieldPscyhon+

Surf- and skate-boarder Tony Alva (web) is the subject of this Psychonautes (web | Fb) stencil in Garfield Street. In addition to another Tony Alva, Psychonautes has also done portraits of two other skateboarding legends – Steve Caballero and Rodney Mullen – in the Frenchman’s adopted hometown of Cork. Some idea of the method used can be gathered from this video of the production of a piece for a tapas restaurant in Dublin.

Let’s Melt

2014-09-24 CNBConzoElphClose+

Two Scottish street artists, Conzo Throb from Glasgow and Elph from Edinburgh, combined to produce the street art above. It features Elph’s distinctive psychedelic landscapes with Conzo’s Taps Aff, with Terror Cheb protruding. (A wide shot is below.) They also each did an individual piece for CNB14: see previously Fill Up On Colour (Conzo Throb) and The Imaginarium (Elph) as well as Elph’s work for the Menagerie bar in The Piano Has Been Smoking and Eyes Wide Shut.

The Phantom Queen

2014-09-24 CNBFrizEve+

The Morrígan (the phantom queen or the great queen) is a character from Irish mythology, appearing prominently in the story of Cú Chulaınn. She takes various forms – crow, cow, wolf, eel, as shown on the right-hand side of the mural above – in addition to appearing as a young and old woman and as a trio of women. (For more info, consult WP.) This is new work by Friz (web | Fb | Tw) for Culture Night Belfast 2014.
