Valar Morghulis

Dublin art collective subset (ig | web) has been battling Dublin County Council over the permissions process for street art in the city since the council ordered the removal of its 2017 mural of rapper Stormzy in December of that year (RTÉ). The ongoing protests currently take the form of the group’s Grey Area Project (video | Huck).

Here are the first two panels (of six) of their their ‘Valar Morghulis‘ piece in Lower Donegall Street when some members came north for CNBX/HTN18 in September. The first piece replaces Lisa Murphy’s 2017 CNB piece, which we called Ecstasy. The second is by weaks (ig).

Glide

Alice Pasquini (web | Fb | ig) from Rome, Italy, took part in this year’s CNBX/HTN18. She describes her Donegall Street piece with a quote from Italo Calvino: “Take life lightly, for lightness is not superficial, but gliding above things, not having weights on your heart”.

To the right is David Creative’s Nosey Cat.

The Butterfly Counts Not Months But Moments

Danni Simpson (web | ig) is a world-travelling Australian who has settled (for now?) in Belfast. Between trips abroad, she painted the piece below back in May for Wardrobe Jam near CS Lewis Square in east Belfast (Andrew Stewart has a gallery of pics of the wardrobes being painted) – the two lions’ heads on the corner walls are intended to look like wings – and for Culture Night 2018 she painted more wings, this time on the hoarding around the demolished 100-year-old buildings in North Street (Belfast LiveBelTel).

Brian Stewart

13 year-old Brian Stewart died on October 10th, 1976 – 42 years ago today – six days after being hit by a plastic bullet fired by the King’s Own Scottish Borders near his Turf Lodge Home. He was buried three days later, on October 13th – what would have been his fourteenth birthday. (For the long search for justice, see sister Marie Stewart | sceptic peg | saoirse32).

By A Thread

In ancient Greek mythology, the Athenian Theseus (though here carrying a Spartan shield) killed the Cretan king Minos’s bull (minotaur) to end the sacrifice of Athenian youths as retribution for the earlier death of his son Androgeos at the Panathenaic games. Glasgow artist Rogue One (Fb | ig) recreated the myth for CNBX/HTN18.

The Golden Hares Of Rathlin Island

The ‘Golden Hare’ is a leucistic (WP) or albino (WP) hare (sources differ), with lighter fur than typical Irish hares. They are found on Rathlin island (Hare Preservation Trust) and now – in artistic form – in Belfast’s city centre, as painted by Birmingham artist Annatomix (web | Fb) for CNBX/HTN18.
