Combo piece by Pens (ig) x KVLR (ig) x Wee Nuls (Nuala Convery | ig | web) replacing the Gang Of Freaks by KVLR x Ten Hundred x Wee Nuls in Union Street, with an echo back to KVLR’s 2015 piece in this spot: Pizza Pipe. Official title: Patchwork Creeps. KVLR and Wee Nuls had earlier done the pieces in the windows of the Sunflower (see final image), as a demo for an audience at the August launch of the programme for HTN21 (Belfast Live).
Street art by Franc Got Buffed (ig) in Kent Street. His title, not ours – inspired by the Channel 4 reality ‘fixer upper’ show Escape To The Chateau (itself presumably inspired by the phrase “escape to the country”?)
Two Larne trees: above, the tree mosaic at the Town Hall steps created by artist Janet Crymble (see previously Sports We Love), with support from Larne Renovation Regeneration, Larne Trader’s Forum, and Mid & East Antrim Borough Council (NIWorld); below, the “Armada Tree” that is purported to have sprung from a chestnut or chestnut seeds in the pocket of a dead sailor in the Spanish Armada – the tree fell over after 432 years in 2020, a victim of root disease (anglican.org), but is remembered by the board depicting it in Upper Main Street, Larne.
“Local legend has it that when the Spanish Armada was passing these shores in 1588, a sailor was washed up at Ballygally village, no doubt from one of the ships blown off course by gales. Locals were said to have taken the body and buried it in the graveyard of the picturesque St Patrick’s Church at Cairncastle. The ancient tree beside the chuch grew from one of the chestnut seeds that the sailor had in his pocket when he was buried. The tree has been analysed and found to date back to the sixteenth century, adding credence to the story.”
“Talents have been robbed by addiction, suicide, mental illness” – the shoes of the dead form part of an installation on Stewart Street, around the perimeter of the Markets. The RNU banner off to the right contains the numbers for Pieta House, PIPS, Samaritans, Teen Line, Lifeline, and Breathing Space.

Ashling Murphy, the County Offaly schoolteacher who was killed while jogging, was a member of Ceoltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, playing fiddle and concertina (Ceoltas). Her death provoked an outpouring of grief and anger across the island, and beyond, including in the Markets, where she was remembered as a fellow Gael. The verse is a popular one from cards and social media – A silent grief that’s in our hearts, no human eye can trace. For many a broken heart is hidden beneath a smiling face – modified slightly to read “hidden and alone“.
The cult of the Great Pumpkin seems to be spreading from the US but it’s not clear that in fact the Great Pumpkin loves unconditionally: in the Peanuts universe, Linus believes that on Halloween night the Great Pumpkin rises from the pumpkin patch and delivers toys to good and believing children (Peanuts wiki). Paste-up in Belfast city centre.
