Amnesty International is working with Eden Place Arts centre on a project into the lives of children, which includes learning to stencil and paint with Donal O’Doherty and Karl Porter from UV Arts in order to produce various murals and paintings. The largest image, of a child’s t-shirt, is shown above. More information from Derry Journal.

“This mural was designed by youth from Pilots Row Youth Club to raise awareness of child labour within the fashion industry, to educate and promote the basic human rights of children across the world. In association with Amnesty International, Eden Place Arts Centre and UV Arts, participants had the opportunity to reflect on the true cost of our throw-away fashion industry and created this thought provoking mural. Help us spread awareness of this and show your support by standing up for someone’s rights today!”

Cross Of Peace

A Christian cross was added (in early 2015?) to the dove and oak leaf on Rossville Street, Derry. For a 2013 image of the previous version, see Network.

The official title of the work is The Peace Mural. For more, see the Visual History page on the Bogside Artists.

Bogside Artist William Kelly passed away today, 2017-01-10 (Derry Journal).

End Internment In Ireland And Palestine

This is an IRPWA (web | Fb) board with the flag of Palestine and the emblem of the Popular Front For The Liberation Of Palestine. The board is now one of five on the Kells Walk stairs, between Mothers & Sisters and the Dove Of Peace. Featured previously: Know Evil, Non-Cooperative Prisoners, and None Shall Be Excluded.

Battle Of The Falls

Four people were killed in the course of The Falls Curfew, the 36 hours from July 3rd to 5th in 1970 during which 3,000 houses on the lower Falls were cordoned off after a weapons search of the area devolved into a riot. The curfew ended with a march of women and children from Andersonstown bearing relief (represented in Falls Curfew 1970).

The information in the centre of the board includes an augmented version of the Wikipedia infobox on the event. Erected in the spot previously reserved by “the Official Republican Movement”.

Prepare To Roar!

Sacred Heart Boxing Academy was housed in the parochial hall (shown in the middle of the mural) before closing perhaps because of safety concerns and/or debt. Above is a shot of the main panel in its entirety (close-ups were featured yesterday (Sacred Heart Boxing Academy). For the panel on the far right in the wide shot, below, see Belfast Boxers.

Bridge

Yesterday we featured the work of the “Ambassadors For Peace” on the Shankill-side gate on Northumberland Street, and today is the turn of the Falls-side gate. Like the upper gate, this one features figures holding hands, though this time on a bridge over a river.

The mural replaces the CRF graffiti on the gate.

For comparison of the gates before and after the new paintings, the second image is of the interior of the Shankill gate.
