The suicide of young people continue to cast a shadow over Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland. (The suicide rate has almost doubled since the ceasefire; a fifth of those dying are under 25.) Here are three images from west Belfast, two from Black Mountain – “RIP Caomhan” and “RIP Butts” where the lettering from “End Brit/S’Mont Cuts” (see Credit Union Limited) has been repurposed. “RIP Punk” is from the junction of the Whiterock and Springfield Roads.

The ‘Teenage Dreams So Hard To Beat’ line from the Undertones’ ‘Teenage Kicks’ is back after a 21-month absence, officially unveiled on Saturday (2015-03-28) during the Urban Village festival (Belfast Live). The new version makes no mention of DJ John Peel, who helped promote the song and after whose 2004 death the original was painted (Tele) by TDS (The Dark Side). The new version was painted by TDS together with youth from Doyle and Ballymac Youth clubs – the sig is below.

SDLP = NCA

Graffiti on the wall outside the Royal Victoria Hospital equates the SDLP with the NCA (below) and renames the it the “Security Directed Labour Party” (above). The National Crime Agency, launched in October 2013 as a “UK FBI” is limited in Northern Ireland to border and customs functions (WP). The dispute between the political parties concerns oversight of the NCA. In England and Wales it is overseen by parliament and there is no local oversight, which worries nationalists. After many months of negotiation, the SDLP in February supported a motion to consent to full introduction of the NCA; Republicans objected on the grounds that the body might become an arm of MI5 (BelTel).

God Bless Paisley, Fitt Never

Gardiner Street graffiti: “God Bless Paisley, Fitt Never.” The graffiti is more than 40 years old, dating to 1969 or earlier (it appears in the Sunday Times magazine 1969-03-23). In 1971, Ian Paisley founded the DUP (in September) and had supplanted Terence O’Neill as the leading unionist politician. Gerry Fitt at that time had recently formed the SDLP and would represent West Belfast under that affiliation in 1974 and 1979 until Gerry Adams won the seat in 1983. The Northern Ireland Assembly was still sitting.

The 2010 work of Jade, Andi, Katie, Leigh, Ellen, Lyndsay, Shannon, and Hannah on the substation at the top of the Glenfield estate’s Oakfield Road has been replaced this week by a new UDA mural sporting a hooded gunman facing the viewer with a slogan borrowed from Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata: “Better to die on your feet than live on your knees in an Irish republic. Join the UDA.”. The two wide shots below allow you to compare the scene this week with last week.

The mural has been criticized by both DUP and Alliance councillors (Newsletter). The final words – Join the UDA – have drawn particular ire, as in other respects it is similar to other murals in featuring hooded gunmen, such as these two other Carrickfergus murals: Inclusion | Eternal Vigilance.
