The king of the jungle is wearing a wide-brimmed purple fedora, in the middle of a long, three shop-front piece by Twitch (Fb) – wide shot below. The sunflowers are for the Sunflower bar, on the other side of the street.
The Morrígan (the phantom queen or the great queen) is a character from Irish mythology, appearing prominently in the story of Cú Chulaınn. She takes various forms – crow, cow, wolf, eel, as shown on the right-hand side of the mural above – in addition to appearing as a young and old woman and as a trio of women. (For more info, consult WP.) This is new work by Friz (web | Fb | Tw) for Culture Night Belfast 2014.
“End internment by remand. End forced strip searches. End controlled movement.”
Fists are raised in defiance of the police state (both PSNI and Gardaí). Cogús (meaning “conscience”) is the division of the Republican Network for Unity (Fb) concerned with political prisoners. (RNU published a list of prisoners before Christmas.)
Pastor James McConnell, who denounced Muslims as “satanists” back in May at the Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle, is finally seeking help, attending “Despots Anonymous” in the company of a Muslim, a Jew, and a Sikh. The group meets next door to 1690, home to a football-loving boy from a family of immigrants who are under attack because the housing is for “locals only” – see the final image for just such a graffito in Pine Way. The bottle of Buckfast preaches “Love thy neighbour as thyself”.
This is another part of Ciaran Gallagher’s (web) “Belfast Stripped Bare” piece in the Duke of York/Dark Horse courtyard. The wide shot, below, shows Carl “The Jackal” Frampton in an upstairs window. There’s also, above the piece, an accompanying poem by Alice McCullough, “Belfast You’re Melting My Head”, which you can watch her recite in front of the piece.
The recently deceased (2014-09-12) Rev. Ian R. K. Paisley (Baron Bannside (WP)) is literally made into a demon in this flyer by TLO in Hill Street, in the city centre. The poster bears both “LOL” and “RIP” markings.
Here is the left-most of a number of panels from new work by Ciaran Gallagher (web) for CNB14 – Belfast Stripped Bare – in the courtyard of the Dark Horse/Duke of York. The piece humorously depicts a row of houses with uncurtained windows which reveal the lives of the inhabitants.
In this pair, a woman smokes a cigarette on the front step of a house with portraits of Kennedy and the pope above the mantle, next door to a pregnant lesbian couple with a pride poster and a cat. The brick-work is real.
If it’s good enough to paint with, it’s good enough to drink. Two characters colour themselves by drinking paint through straws (the male is “Taps Aff“?, with little Terror Cheb in the corner) – work by Glasgow artist Conzo Throb (web | Fb) on the shutters of the old Tivoli barbers in Lower Garfield Street for Culture Night Belfast 2014.
A new piece for CNB14 in Lower Garfield Street, immediately recognizable from Scottish artist Elph’s inimitable style, here using a palette of pinks and blues. On his Fb page you can see a sketch done in preparation for the work.
Here are two images of the new Visual Waste piece in North Street, completed as part of Culture Night Belfast, 2014. Bob Odenkirk plays the lead character, Saul Goodman, in the upcoming series Better Call Saul, a spin-off of Breaking Bad, whose lead character (Bryan Cranston as Walter White) was the subject of last year’s Visual Waste CNB piece (see Broken Bad).
