Two murals by Mark Bodé (web) and another in his style (and that of his father, Vaughan Bodé). The first is on the Cupar Way “peace” line and shows a disgruntled caveman and the Yellow Hat character; the second is in the Lecky Road underpass in London-/Derry and shows the character Cobalt 60; and the third is a promotional mural in the style of the Bodés in Gresham Street. All three date to this (2015) summer, when Bodé came to Derry for the ‘Release The Pressure’ street art festival. (Bodé’s official piece for the festival, painted with Dave Bonzai, can be seen in Metalmorphosis.)

When John Stewart painted a new Titanic mural in Cuba Walk last November (2014), he painted over a UFF crest-and-flags (for which see M07651). The lower part of the mural, however, was left untouched. It is obscured by a 6′ high wall around the house. As can been seen in these three images, it included Northern Irish and Scottish flags, “Ulster 1690. “Ulster Volunteer Force” is probably a later addition, given that the original mural was for the UFF.

Road To Equality

The road to equality is long and winding and goes through Andersonstown’s Derrin Pass. The junction is full of small board depicting Gaelic games, Irish culture, and landscape drawings, as well as exhortations towards equality — see the corresponding entry in the Peter Moloney Collection.

Cairns & Co. Ltd were not only “Manufacturing and export chemists” but (according to the 1908 street directory) “Aerated and mineral water manufacturers” with works at “Balmoral Springs, Lisburn Road”.

The red hand of Ulster is not just a symbol of the province from the time of the earls (see An Ancient And Powerful Symbol), it is also an emblem of the Ulster Volunteers (and also the modern-day Ulster Volunteer Force/UVF) who were formed in anticipation of Home Rule in Ireland and fought in WWI. “This cross”, which is on the railings outside Pitt Park in east Belfast, “is marked with the blood of our membership in recognition of the sacrifice made for freedom and democracy in the modern world. Broadway United FC

Information on-line is scarce concerning Broadway United FC. They might have been an intermediate team but are said to have won the junior Irish Cup in 1912 — the date of the image above in which the team poses with its trophies — beating Black Watch FC 1–0.

Liverpool’s longest serving player, goalkeeper Elisha Scott (WP), began his career at Broadway United, playing there for two years before making 402 appearances at Anfield and then going to Belfast Celtic as player and manager. The Irish Times has a profile of Elisha and his brother Billy, goalkeeper at Everton. (Thanks to John Duffin for these links.)

Another Sunrise, Another New Beginning

This is the middle wall on the site of the former Andersonstown RUC station, which has undergone three changes in recent months. The longstanding Fıanna sunburst (see X00350) was painted over with IRPWA stencils (Stop strip searches, End Internment, Justice For The Craigavon 2) which in turn were largely covered with writing by DAZE (see the image below). Most recently, a large Fıanna banner, shown above, has been placed over the wall.
