Bloody Sunday
Six of the dead on Bloody Sunday (January 31st, 1972) were from Creggan, and the funeral service for all 13 immediate victims took place in St Mary’s Chapel, at the bottom of Bishop’s Field; the board of photographs shown in today’s post are at the top, on Creggan’s Cental Drive.

Freedom Fighter For The Republic
IRA volunteer George McBrearty was shot, together with Charles “Pop” Maguire, by the SAS on May 28th, 1981. This new mural was painted by Bogside Artist Kevin Hasson and unveiled on the 36th anniversary of his death. McBrearty is wearing an Easter lily on his lapel and the proclamation of independence backgrounds his portrait. (Video of the launch.)

End British Rule
Liam Ball
Derry swimmer Liam Ball represented Ireland at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics in Mexico and Munich. He died in 1984 at age 33 and is remembered on the wall of local heroes at Creggan shops. There are five other portraits – of James McLean, Tony O’Doherty, David McAuley, Charlie Nash, and Aileen Reid – painted by Karl Porter and Donal O’Doherty from UV Arts.

Unfinished Business
The “Unfinished revolution – unfinished business” board at the top of Westland Street (recorded in a 2016 entry) has been updated in various ways: the year has been changed to “2017” and “Join the IRA” added in stencil. Around the board “IRA” and “Smash Stormont” graffiti has been added.

Bernadette
The new Bernadette mural on Lecky Road, Derry, is considerably lighter than its predecessor (which can be seen in the Peter Moloney Collection). The setting is still the Battle Of The Bogside, after which Devlin was served six months for inciting a riot, but Bernadette, with megaphone, is in red while the woman with the bin lid is wearing blue jeans. The bulldog and the child in yellow carrying the bin lid like the shield of a Celtic warrior are new additions. The wall in the background was previously Free Derry Corner.
