Same-sex marriages took place for the first time in England, Wales, and Scotland in 2014 (and last month on the Isle of Man (BBC-NI)) but they remain illegal in Northern Ireland. Shown here are two images of Roscommon artist Joe Caslin’s massive paste-up in Hill Street, showing a Northern Ireland couple “Charlene & Sharon” (Tw) who went to the U.S. in order to marry, and a companion piece to his piece in George’s Street South in Dublin, showing two men. The parade of Belfast’s Pride festival takes place today.

Voters (finally!) go to the polls today in the much-discussed “Brexit” referendum. Opinion on the nationalist side is split – the image above advises “leave” “for independence, for democracy, for freedom, for Europe, for peace” while in the third image the poster is pro-remain with the suggestion that “We’re better off in.” In between, a poster in a loyalist area alleges that “We send the EU £50 million every day — let’s spend that on our NHS instead.”

Sınn Féın candidate Pat Sheehan attempted to shore up support among republicans by using the image shown above and below for his campaign propaganda in the recent Assembly elections, hearkening back to the 1981 hunger strike, in which a 23-year-old Sheehan went 55 days without food, until the strike was called off. The tactic was successful and Sheehan was re-elected from his Belfast West constituency.

Three more images from the recent electoral season. Political parties were putting up hoardings and posters everywhere, such as Sınn Féın’s “Vote” ad (next to one for the rock-band Busted on their ‘Pigs Can Fly’ tour) and the DUP’s use of the spectre of a nationalist first minister as a reason to “keep” Arlene Foster and colleagues. Above, however, the watch-word is “stop”: “Want change? Stop vot[i]ng”.
