Jobstown Not Guilty

We go beyond the North for today’s post: November 2014 protests over water charges (and austerity measures in general) in Tallaght, Dublin blocked in Deputy Prime Minister Joan Bruton’s car for 2.5 hours (some video | broader account). A teenager was convicted of false imprisonment but conditionally discharged in 2016 (Irish Times). The placard shown above relates to the trial of a first group of (adult) protesters, including TD Paul Murphy, at the end of June, 2017 which ended in their acquittal – which led to an internal inquiry by Gardaí of their handling of the case. End Internment In Ireland And Palestine

This is an IRPWA (web | Fb) board with the flag of Palestine and the emblem of the Popular Front For The Liberation Of Palestine. Battle Of The Falls

Four people were killed in the course of The Falls Curfew, the 36 hours from July 3rd to 5th in 1970 during which 3,000 houses on the lower Falls were cordoned off after a weapons search of the area devolved into a riot. The curfew ended with a march of women and children from Andersonstown bearing relief (represented in Falls Curfew 1970).

The information in the centre of the board includes an augmented version of the Wikipedia infobox on the event. Erected in the spot previously reserved by “the Official Republican Movement”.

Sacred Heart Boxing Academy was housed in the parochial hall (shown in the middle of the mural) before closing perhaps because of safety concerns and/or debt. LA’s Walk Of Fame

Holy Cross Girls’ Primary is a Catholic school within the loyalist enclave of Glenbryn in upper Ardoyne. Although it is in the style of the Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball team) “LA” in this case stands for “loyalist Ardoyne”. The school was the site of some extraordinary scenes during 2001 as police and army formed a cordon against local protesters so that children could reach the school. (See It’s Black And White.)
