This is a new board at the Crumlin end of Brompton Park – launched on August 6th by Gerry Kelly and members of the Cliftonville football team – in support of Palestine and Gaza, and in particular protesting the deaths of the four Bakr children on the beach at the port of Gaza on July 16th (see Child Killers). The image of the man carrying the boy is from Reuters. The wide shot, below, shows the “peace” line and union jacks flying at the camp at the Crumlin-Woodvale-Twaddell roundabout.

“End British Internment – End Maghaberry Torture – Strip searches, isolation, controlled movement”. The board above at the top of Havana Street, Ardoyne, shows a a prison guard in Union colours beating a prisoner in the Tricolour’s green, white, and orange. On the left is the barbed wire symbol of the Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association (IRPWA) and on the right the emblems of the PSNI, the RUC, and MI5 are crossed out under a swastika. A wide shot, showing the CLG/GAA mural in the background, is below.

Above is the third panel from a recent (2014-07) mural advertising the Ardoyne Association, whose office is just down the street. As the shot of the full mural shows, asking for advice and help with debt will make it finally stop raining (and turn you blonde?). Some images of the mural in progress, painted by Michael Doherty, can be found at the Association’s Facebook page.

This mural is on the Ardoyne-Glenbryn “peace” wall, on the Alliance Avenue side, showing a DJ with two turntables and a crowd of local (cross-community?) youths: Beth, Mat(?), Jake, Brittany, Trevor, George, Alyssa, Jessica, Anna, Corbin, Maria, Julia, Mary, Rachel, Emily, El(?), Jennifer. Community and anti-bullying board at the junction of Hallidays Road and the Limestone Road welcoming people to Tiger’s Bay. You can see two images of the boards in progress on the Dean Clarke Foundation’s Fb page. The foundation is also involved in the community garden which can be seen in a previous post on a H&W workers mural and which sits across from the b&w Belfast Blitz mural.

Rebuilding Confidence

Mural celebrating the old Tiger’s Bay First Flute marching band, established 1983. The mural is in the style of the UDA’s insignia; of late a UDA power-struggle has been taking place in the area – see Split.

In the background is a board showing the Union flag, the Ulster banner, and St. Andrew’s saltire (the latter pair are also featured in the lower corners of the mural), which in June replaced a ‘Mother – Daughter – Sister’ board celebrating women and designed by children from the local Mountcollyer Youth Club.

The Old New Lodge

Ed Reynolds has completed a set of more than 20 panels at the switchback steps and ramps that lift pedestrians from North Queen Street into the New Lodge estate. As described on his web site, many of the panels are based on old photographs of the area and its residents. The work was officially unveiled on Wednesday (June 18th) and was sponsored by New Lodge Arts and Belfast City Council.

St. Patrick’s on Donegall Street serves as the local Catholic church for the New Lodge. Its spire rises above the houses in a detail from the community mural at the bottom of the New Lodge, painted by Ed Reynolds (steadyhanded.com), based on vintage photographs of the area and its residents.
