The Ulster Workers Council (UWC), formed in 1974 with the backing of the UDA, organized a general strike in opposition to the December 1973 Sunningdale Agreement – signed by the British government – which would have shared power with Nationalists in the north and established a cross-border council involving the Dublin government. The strike went on for two weeks in May 1974 (during which the Dublin-Monaghan bombings took place, killing 33 people in the Republic) and concluded with the collapse of the Northern Ireland Executive and rule reverting to Westminster.
The mural was painted for the 30th anniversary of the strike and is now partially covered with ivy (see below). For the mural in better days see M02610. The photograph reproduced can be seen on the Bel Tel.

The mural ‘History Is Written By The Winner‘ was replaced by the mural above as part of Oliver Jeffers‘s film (trailer) for U2’s Songs Of Innocence. It features Joey Ramone (after a song on the album called “The Miracle Of Joey Ramone”) with Earth for a head. The band finished a tour of North America with a July 31st concert in New York, attended by Bill and Hillary Clinton (USNews).

The words of Winston Churchill, in a radio address to the people of France in October 1940, followed by John Maxwell Edmonds’s memorial epitaph, are included on the headstone at the centre of this mural to the 10th battalion of the Inniskilling Fusiliers (The Derrys), the 109th brigade of the 36th (Ulster) Division, who fought at the Somme in WWI: “In proud memory of our fallen comrades from the Nelson Drive Flute Band. Glorious on the graves of heroes, kindly upon all those who have suffered for the cause. Thus will shine the dawn. They gave their tomorrow for our today.”

The Kashmir Bar on the Springfield Road gets a face-lift with a mural of the old Kashmir Bar, including the boast that it was home to the best singers in the west. A look at the Kashmir Bar Facebook page reveals that pool seems to be the foremost activity. For a photo of the old (green-fronted) bar, see D00283. A week before he was assassinated and his government overthrown, Burkina Faso president Thomas Sankara asserted: “While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas.” Sankara gained power of Burkina Faso (then Upper Volta) in a 1983 coup and launched an ambitious programme of literacy, feminism, public health, and agricultural self-sufficiency, in addition to launching a drive against corruption and of nationalizing natural resources. He attempted this all without the assistance of foreign aid or the IMF or World Bank. However, he wielded power outside the jurisdiction of the courts and controlled the press. He and twelve colleagues were killed in October 1987.
