If The Shoe Fits

2014-11-19 PrincessesCinderella+

At all of 19 years old, Cinderella on the stairs holds rank over her younger stable-mates in this panel from the ‘Disney Princesses’ mural in the Slıabh Dubh estate. (Among the Disney court, only Frozen‘s Elsa is older, at 21, though at the time of writing she is not officially a Disney Princess. Snow White was 14.) From left to right, the princesses and their familiars shown are: Fa Mulan, Aurora (from Sleeping Beauty), Belle (from Beauty And The Beast), Tiana (from The Princess And The Frog),Max (the dog from Little Mermaid), and the two Cinderella mice, Jaq and Gus.

For images of Ariel, Snow White and the wicked witch, and Anna from Frozen, see Look Behind You!

Four Step

2014-11-21 FourstepWide2+

“This poppy cross is in memory of the two men murdered at this spot by a no warning sectarian IRA bomb attack on the Four Step Inn public house on 29th September 1971.” The two men were Alexander Andrews (60) and Ernest Bates (38) (CAIN). A similar cross was also erected further down the Shankill, at the former site of Frizzell’s Fishmongers, bombed in 1993. Both attacks are among the five Shankill bombings commemorated in Where Is Our Truth?

Return To Loyalist Tiger’s Bay

2014-11-13 LoyalistTigersBay+

The previous board in this location said “‘yes’ to a better future” beneath a tiger, a rainbow, and a DJ at his turntables (see an image at CCDL). That future, it seems, is to go back to a mural similar to the one prior to 2009 – You’re entering Loyalist Tiger’s Bay – though the explicit UDA/UFF insignia are gone, leaving only the clenched fist.

The Poor Ground

2014-11-12 PoorGravesPlaque+

Milltown Cemetery contains what appear to be three large, unused, spaces (see the second and third images, below). They are in fact the Poor Grounds, mass graves of those unable to afford an individual grave. The plaque shown above puts their number at 65,000; WP puts it at 80,000. (The total number buried is about 200,000.) They include victims of typhus in the 1870s, and of the great influenza pandemic of 1918-1919. There is more information at CultureNI and Milltown Cemetery.Tom Hartley’s book on Milltown was released by Blackstaff Press last year (2014).

“Public Sections 24, 27 & 33, opened November 1869, closed January 1937, hold the remains of 65,000 men, women and children. Rannóga pobıl 24, 27 & 33 fosclaíodh é Samhaın 1869, druıdeadh é Eanáır 1937. Istıgh tá 65,000 corp d’fhır, mhná agus de pháıstí. Requiescant in pace.”
