This is the second half of the Carrickfergus Timeline in Market Place, covering the history of the town from arrival of King William and General Schomberg to the modern day, including the last witch trial in Ireland and the construction of a railway allowing tourists sailing into Larne to reach the town easily: “Don’t let anything stop you from coming to Carrickfergus – if you cannot get on a train, hire a donkey cart”. The panels were written by Seth Linder.

In The Land Of The Cyclops

When you come home from work one afternoon to find that your back window has been blinded by a giant poster of three fashionable ladies, each with one eye covered, images from i-D magazine which turns its name sideways to form a winking face, the only appropriate recourse would be to take a large knife and cut yourself a peeper. The pigeons by KVLR and Apache Tribe have yet to peck their way free of the flower-headed man to uncover the window on the Gresham Street side.

The images were part of the 2019 Belfast Photo Festival. Covered over is NOTA’s 2013 Belfast Butcher

The Old IRA

Cú Chulaınn stands dying; the raven on his shoulder will signal his death. “This memorial is dedicated to all the brave and gallant men and women of the Old IRA (Óglaıgh na hÉıreann) and Cumann Na mBán who fought in all of the campaigns from the 1920s War of Independence onwards.”

The Irish tricolour with crossed rifles was the flag of the Irish Volunteers (Óglaıgh na hÉıreann), the splits in which gave rise all the subsequent IRAs.

“‘To unite Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter under the common name of Irishmen in order to break the connection with England, the never failing source of all our political evils, that was my aim’ (Theobald Wolfe Tone, 1763-1798)”. As the dates suggest, Tone was captured and sentenced to death; his exact cause of death is uncertain – perhaps a self-inflicted knife to the throat, or a bullet to the throat. The other portraits are of Michael Dywer [should be “Dwyer”], Lord Edward Fitzgerald, Anne Devlin, Mary Anne McCracken, Betsy Gray, Fr. John Murphy, William Orr, Robert Emmet, Henry-Joy McCracken, and Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa.

Social distancing was hard to maintain in some areas (BelTel) but many people celebrated the 12th from home this year, thank in part to messages such as appear on this pair of paste-ups in Olive Street and Glenvale Street off the Woodvale Road. “This year the bands are coming to you!” “This year’s 12th is about the battle with the [coronavirus] bug.”

Another entry in a growing list of religious placards adorning the streets during the covid-19 pandemic, this time from the Shankill: “Drive-In Gospel – Gospel Hall Matchett Street, Sunday at 7:00pm.” According a survey cited in this FT article, the faith of Americans has generally strengthened during the pandemic.

“You were given this life because you are strong enough to live it.” This Shankill Road poster actually dates back to the anti-suicide #MessagesOfHope campaign undertaken at the end of 2018 (see You Are Enough) but continues to be relevant as the Covid-19 epidemic continues.
