The sixteen-year old Sınn Féın Trade Union Dept mural has been replaced (though the plaque remains in the top right-hand corner) with another mural featuring James Connolly but with a new quote, from his 1907 poem: “Our demands most moderate are/We only want the earth.” The Irish Worker headline reads “Belfast ITGWU organiser Connolly gets 905 votes municipal elections” referring to the municipal elections of 1913 – Connolly stood in the Dock Ward (SIPTU).

Always British

Cluan Place is a single street in east Belfast separated from (nationalist) Short Strand by a “peace” line. For a history of Cluan Place, see Out Of The Ashes. “5 people shot – houses burnt – houses bombed. 20 families intimidated out by Sinn Fein/IRA. Still loyalist. No surrender.”

The mural – to make the point that Northern Ireland is British – features an unusual combination of Union Flag and Ulster Banner.

Remember The Hunger Strikers

This is the seventh year of the hunger strikers mural in Twinbrook. This is 2012/31st anniversary edition. See previously 2006 and 2008. There is a Marian Price poster on the left, next to Michael Gaughan and Frank Stagg, who died on hunger strikes in 1974 and 1976. Blanket-men Hugh Rooney and Freddie Toal are shown in the large mural on the right hand side, next to Bobby Sands.

“Climate Change Affects Everyone … But Not Equally”. The sands of time are running out: carbon spewing into the atmosphere from factories (on the left) is melting the ice-caps, leaving polar bears without a place to stand (upper hourglass) and flooding Belfast (lower hourglass), and the Statue Of Liberty too.

“Reduce your carbon footprint.” With support from Eco-Schools and Trócaıre.

In March or April of 2012, many of the murals on the International Wall were modified to include ‘posters’ for the ‘Free Marian Price’ campaign, including the ’40 year’ black taxi mural shown above. As a member of the IRA, Price was jailed for the Old Bailey bombing in 1973 (WP), and her post-Agreement license was revoked in May, 2011, when she was charged, as a member of the Real IRA, in connection with the Massereene Barracks shooting (WP) of 2009 – she was sent to Maghaberry. Starting in June, 2011, graffiti and art calling for her release began appearing.

Below are more of the modified murals on the wall. Not included below are the Falls Curfew modification and the Kieran Nugent modification (see M08273).

Her Majesty’s Forces In Afghanistan

This is a recent mural to British forces in Linn Road, Larne. The larger piece of writing on the board above reads, “We wish to pay tribute to the young men and women from this area, who are currently serving or have served with Her Majesty’s Forces in Afghanistan and to those from Northern Ireland who have paid the Surpreme Sacrifice. Lest we forget”.

The smaller one has part of the Ode of Remembrance from Laurence Binyon’s poem For The Fallen: “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun, And in the morning, We will Remember them.”

Replaces the Oliver Cromwell mural on Linn Road, Larne.
